Attic Insulation For Propane And Oil Heated Homes In The Ottawa Valley, Ontario

Ontario attic rebates up to $1,250 may apply

Air sealing and attic insulation cut how much propane or oil a rural house burns each winter, because less heat escapes upward. The savings count for more when the fuel costs more.

Outside the town gas lines, valley homes run on propane, oil, wood or electric heat. Those fuels usually cost more for each unit of heat than natural gas. Every bit of warmth that stays indoors means fewer tank fills over a long winter.

Where A Propane Or Oil Heated House Loses Heat

The ceiling is usually the largest single leak. Warm air rises, slips through gaps around fixtures and wires and carries heat into the attic, and a thin or matted layer of attic insulation lets even more through.

We close those gaps first, then blow new attic insulation to R-60. In a farmhouse, that also means capping the open wall tops. The attic air sealing page lists what we look for.

The Ontario Rebate And Propane Or Oil Heat

Ontario's Home Renovation Savings program now includes homes that heat mainly with propane, oil or wood, provided the house is connected to the Ontario electricity grid. Homes on Enbridge natural gas or electric heat qualify as well. You must own the home, and it must be a detached, semi-detached, row or mobile home on a permanent foundation.

There are two routes. The quick attic stream needs no energy assessment and pays up to $1,250 for going from R-12 or less to at least R-50, up to $1,000 from R-12 to R-25, and up to $800 from R-25 to R-35. That stream pays only for work by contractors already on the program's own list, and the list is not accepting new names, so look it up on the program website before you book.

The second route adds a registered energy advisor before and after the work and calls for two or more upgrades, for example the attic plus air sealing or windows. On that route, the installer is your choice. The program is currently scheduled to end November 30, 2026, and its rules can change at any time. The full tiers, the cathedral ceiling amounts and the eligibility rules sit on the attic insulation rebate page, last checked in October 2026.

Jobs That Pair Well With This One

Sealing, baffles and new fill usually travel together, and one drive out covers all of them.

Attic Insulation Top-Up

An attic insulation top-up lays new loose fill over the layer you have now until the whole attic reads R-60. When the existing layer is dry and sound, it is the fastest way to warm the top floor.

Blown-In Cellulose Insulation

Cellulose insulation is blown loose over the attic floor, where it drapes around wires, braces and low eaves that a batt cannot reach. It suits the uneven, crowded attics of older valley houses.

Farmhouse Attic Insulation

Farmhouse attic insulation begins by sealing the open wall tops and board ceilings that let heat pour into an old attic, then lays deep loose fill on top. It is the job old valley farmhouses need most.

Attic Insulation Removal

Attic insulation removal clears out old material that is wet, mouldy, crushed flat or soiled by animals, so new fill can go onto a clean attic floor. Blowing over a ruined layer only hides the trouble.

Attic Air Sealing

Attic air sealing closes the holes in your ceiling where warm house air drifts up into the attic. It always comes before new fill, since insulation slows heat but lets moving air pass.

Ice Dam Prevention

Ice dam prevention keeps the roof cold from underneath by sealing air leaks, opening the soffit vents and adding attic insulation to R-60. Stop the melt in the attic and the ice stops building at the edge.

Attic Insulation Rebate

Valley homeowners who lift a thin attic to R-50 can claim an attic insulation rebate under the province's Home Renovation Savings program, and $1,250 is the top amount. Propane, oil, wood, electric and gas heated houses can all apply.
