Attic Insulation Top-Up
An attic insulation top-up lays new loose fill over the layer you have now until the whole attic reads R-60. When the existing layer is dry and sound, it is the fastest way to warm the top floor.

Cellulose insulation is blown loose over the attic floor, where it drapes around wires, braces and low eaves that a batt cannot reach. It suits the uneven, crowded attics of older valley houses.
Cellulose insulation is mostly recycled newsprint, treated with borate so it resists fire, mould and bugs. The cellulose insulation rides out to the job in tight bales, gets fluffed in the blower on the truck and travels up a long hose into the attic. Because it moves like a heavy snow, it settles into small gaps a roll would bridge over.
Old attics are rarely level or square. Joist sizes change partway across, wires cross at odd angles and boards or old fill sit in the bays. Cellulose insulation covers all of it as one blanket with no seams.
Cellulose insulation is also fairly dense, which slows air drifting through the layer. That makes cellulose insulation a good fit for a windy attic where the air near the eaves gets very cold.
R-60 is what Natural Resources Canada suggests for an Ontario attic. With cellulose insulation, that comes to roughly 16 to 18 inches, and the bag chart for each product sets the exact figure. Marked depth sticks stand across the attic so you can check the level anywhere.
Fresh cellulose insulation sinks a little during its first year. We blow the extra height the maker calls for at the start, so the attic still reads R-60 once the layer has settled.
When the old layer is dry and clean, cellulose insulation can go straight on top as an attic insulation top-up. We count what is there toward the R-value and add only the missing depth.
Sealing comes first, every time. Pot lights, wire holes and the hatch are closed before cellulose insulation covers them for good.
In Ontario, blown cellulose insulation runs about $1.25 to $2.50 for each square foot of ceiling. An 1,100 square foot attic often falls between $1,400 and $2,700. Sealing and baffles are priced apart from the cellulose insulation.

Sealing, baffles and new fill usually travel together, and one drive out covers all of them.

Farmhouse attic insulation begins by sealing the open wall tops and board ceilings that let heat pour into an old attic, then lays deep loose fill on top. It is the job old valley farmhouses need most.

Attic insulation removal clears out old material that is wet, mouldy, crushed flat or soiled by animals, so new fill can go onto a clean attic floor. Blowing over a ruined layer only hides the trouble.

Vermiculite insulation needs a lab test before anyone disturbs it, because some of it contains asbestos. Testing comes first, clean-out second and new attic insulation last.

Attic air sealing closes the holes in your ceiling where warm house air drifts up into the attic. It always comes before new fill, since insulation slows heat but lets moving air pass.

Ice dam prevention keeps the roof cold from underneath by sealing air leaks, opening the soffit vents and adding attic insulation to R-60. Stop the melt in the attic and the ice stops building at the edge.

Air sealing and attic insulation cut how much propane or oil a rural house burns each winter, because less heat escapes upward. The savings count for more when the fuel costs more.

Valley homeowners who lift a thin attic to R-50 can claim an attic insulation rebate under the province's Home Renovation Savings program, and $1,250 is the top amount. Propane, oil, wood, electric and gas heated houses can all apply.

Attic insulation cost across the valley usually falls between $1,500 and $4,000 for a full job, and the drive to your home is already part of that. The written quote after a free visit gives you the real figure.
