Attic Insulation Top-Up
An attic insulation top-up lays new loose fill over the layer you have now until the whole attic reads R-60. When the existing layer is dry and sound, it is the fastest way to warm the top floor.
Details and prices
Valley homeowners who lift a thin attic to R-50 can claim an attic insulation rebate under the province's Home Renovation Savings program, and $1,250 is the top amount. Propane, oil, wood, electric and gas heated houses can all apply.
Enbridge Gas runs the program with Save on Energy, and it covers the whole valley from Arnprior to Deep River. Below is what the attic insulation rebate pays, who can claim it and how its two routes differ. We last checked these details in October 2026.
The standalone attic stream needs no energy assessment. It pays $1,250 when the attic starts at R-12 or less and finishes at R-50, $1,000 when it starts between R-13 and R-25, and $800 when it starts between R-26 and R-35. A flat roof or cathedral ceiling gets $750 for going from R-25 or less to R-28, or $650 for going from R-12 or less to R-20.
Two limits sit on every attic insulation rebate. The amount cannot pass half of what the job costs after tax, and the entire reachable attic must be done, not only the easy part near the hatch.
The second route brings in a registered energy advisor to inspect the house before and after, and it expects at least two upgrades. Its attic insulation rebate rises to $1,500, $1,200 or $900 for those same starting depths, and to $780 for a flat roof or cathedral ceiling.
On this route the choice of contractor is yours. The advisor's two reports, with an invoice showing the depth before and after, are what back the claim.
You must own the home, and it must be a detached, semi-detached or row house, a non-stacked townhouse, or a mobile home sitting on a permanent foundation. A house on Enbridge natural gas needs an active account and a gas furnace or boiler. A house heated with electricity, propane, oil or wood needs to be connected to Ontario's electricity grid.
Stacked townhouses are out, as are homes occupied for half the year or less and any address that already collected an attic insulation rebate through Enbridge, through Save on Energy or through another Ontario program. Landlords can apply for a rental, while a seasonal cottage may still qualify.
The standalone stream pays only when a contractor on the program's list of names does the work and files the paperwork, and the program has stopped adding to that list. At our last check it named George Kent, Solidcare, Great Northern Insulation, Home Depot, Brand Insulation and EcoComfort. Look the list up on the program's website ahead of booking anyone for an attic insulation rebate job. If you would rather choose your own installer, the assessment route keeps that choice open.
The program is currently scheduled to end November 30, 2026. It was extended once already, from the same date in 2025, and could be extended again, but the money goes out first come, first served, and the official page prints no closing date. Treat November as the working deadline for an attic insulation rebate.
Whatever happens to the rebate, sealing and filling the attic to R-60 still cuts the heat lost through the ceiling every winter. Our attic insulation cost page shows what the work itself usually runs.

Sealing, baffles and new fill usually travel together, and one drive out covers all of them.

Cellulose insulation is blown loose over the attic floor, where it drapes around wires, braces and low eaves that a batt cannot reach. It suits the uneven, crowded attics of older valley houses.

Farmhouse attic insulation begins by sealing the open wall tops and board ceilings that let heat pour into an old attic, then lays deep loose fill on top. It is the job old valley farmhouses need most.

Attic insulation removal clears out old material that is wet, mouldy, crushed flat or soiled by animals, so new fill can go onto a clean attic floor. Blowing over a ruined layer only hides the trouble.

Vermiculite insulation needs a lab test before anyone disturbs it, because some of it contains asbestos. Testing comes first, clean-out second and new attic insulation last.

Attic air sealing closes the holes in your ceiling where warm house air drifts up into the attic. It always comes before new fill, since insulation slows heat but lets moving air pass.

Ice dam prevention keeps the roof cold from underneath by sealing air leaks, opening the soffit vents and adding attic insulation to R-60. Stop the melt in the attic and the ice stops building at the edge.

Air sealing and attic insulation cut how much propane or oil a rural house burns each winter, because less heat escapes upward. The savings count for more when the fuel costs more.

Attic insulation cost across the valley usually falls between $1,500 and $4,000 for a full job, and the drive to your home is already part of that. The written quote after a free visit gives you the real figure.
