Attic Insulation Top-Up
An attic insulation top-up lays new loose fill over the layer you have now until the whole attic reads R-60. When the existing layer is dry and sound, it is the fastest way to warm the top floor.

Phone and ask. A quick talk before the visit lets us load the right materials for your house.
No separate trip charge applies. The drive to any home in our service area is part of the written attic insulation price.
Natural Resources Canada suggests R-60 for an Ontario attic. Lots of valley houses have R-20 to R-40 now, so most need more depth.
Yes, as long as the old layer is dry, clean and free of vermiculite. It stays as the base and counts toward the final R-value. Wet, mouldy or soiled material comes out first.
Often they do. Many farmhouses have open wall tops from balloon framing, old wiring and a chimney passing through the attic. We cap the wall tops, ask for an electrician's check on old wiring and frame a dam around the chimney before the new fill goes in.
Leave it alone and keep the hatch closed. Get a sample tested by a lab. If it holds asbestos, an abatement contractor clears it, and new attic insulation goes in once the attic is clean.
It is a big part of the answer. Most ice dams start with house heat leaking into the attic, so sealing, open soffit vents and a deep layer of fill keep the roof cold and the snow melts evenly.
Ontario's Home Renovation Savings program covers homes heated with propane, oil or wood that are on the Ontario power grid. Its quick attic stream pays only for work by contractors already on the program's list, while a second route with an energy advisor lets you pick your installer. The program is currently scheduled to end November 30, 2026. Our attic insulation rebate page has the tiers and rules, and the program website has the latest word.
Most full jobs come to $1,500 to $4,000. A blown-in top-up runs about $1.25 to $2.75 for each square foot of ceiling, and small jobs begin near $1,200 with the drive included.
Most attics are done in a day. A clean-out first, or a very large farmhouse attic, can stretch it to two.
We ask that someone is home at the start, to go over the plan, and at the end, to see the finished level.
Each page goes deeper into one kind of attic job, with the usual price range for it.

Cellulose insulation is blown loose over the attic floor, where it drapes around wires, braces and low eaves that a batt cannot reach. It suits the uneven, crowded attics of older valley houses.

Farmhouse attic insulation begins by sealing the open wall tops and board ceilings that let heat pour into an old attic, then lays deep loose fill on top. It is the job old valley farmhouses need most.
Details and prices
Attic insulation removal clears out old material that is wet, mouldy, crushed flat or soiled by animals, so new fill can go onto a clean attic floor. Blowing over a ruined layer only hides the trouble.

Vermiculite insulation needs a lab test before anyone disturbs it, because some of it contains asbestos. Testing comes first, clean-out second and new attic insulation last.

Attic air sealing closes the holes in your ceiling where warm house air drifts up into the attic. It always comes before new fill, since insulation slows heat but lets moving air pass.

Ice dam prevention keeps the roof cold from underneath by sealing air leaks, opening the soffit vents and adding attic insulation to R-60. Stop the melt in the attic and the ice stops building at the edge.

Air sealing and attic insulation cut how much propane or oil a rural house burns each winter, because less heat escapes upward. The savings count for more when the fuel costs more.

Valley homeowners who lift a thin attic to R-50 can claim an attic insulation rebate under the province's Home Renovation Savings program, and $1,250 is the top amount. Propane, oil, wood, electric and gas heated houses can all apply.
